FIBER Festival 2020 took place from 24 – 27 September at De Brakke Grond, Tolhuistuin and online. The festival encompassed a conference programme, an exhibition, workshops and a performance evening all curated in response to theme of Instability. With this theme we set out to explore new ways of understanding and adapting to an age of planetary and societal changes.

Linked to the urgency of climate change and ecological crisis, this year FIBER was looking for new insights, non-human ways of thinking and possible strategies in order to perceive our world in alternate ways. What opportunities are open to artistic making and thinking to contribute to this necessary transformation?

HYBRID CONFERENCE
Our two-day hybrid conference programme invited a multitude of perspectives—from artists to activists and scientists—and allowed us to look at environmental crises and its related social challenges in alternate ways. Our studio set-up in De Brakke Grond became the control room where our international and local speakers converged in time and space, expertly led by our moderator Michelle Kasprzak.

Participating speakers: Abdelrhman Hassan; Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg; Anab Jain; Anca Benera & Arnold Estefan; Angela Chan; Arif Kornweitz; Bayo Akomolafe; Darko Lagunas & Theun Karelse; Holly Jean Buck; Kim Stanley Robinson; Michaele Büsse; Ruben Jacobs; Sébastien Robert; Suzanne Dhaliwal; Tega Brain; Yara Feghali & Viviane El-Kmati.

Performances: Mark IJzerman & Sébastien Robert and Wanderwalle at De Brakke Grond.

EXHIBITION
Our exhibition at Tolhuistuin responded to the transformative impact that humans have on Earth by delving into the topic of the ecological crises and its underlying social and economic inequalities through artistic thought, experience and imagination.

Participating artists: Luiz Zanotello; Irene Stracuzzi & Alice Wong; Sissel Marie Tonn; Thijs Ebbe Fokkens; Tivon Rice; Tom Burke; Sébastien Robert; Vanessa Opuku & Lion Sauterleute; Whitespace (Anni Nöps & Casimir Geelhoed).

WORKSHOPS
Interdependence by Mat Dryhurst and Digital Swarming Research by Tools for Action & Floor van Leeuwen.
