The Blackstone River, running from Worcester, Massachusetts (US) to Providence, Rhode Island, is one of the most heavily dammed rivers in the U.S. Most of the dams were initially constructed in the 1800’s for the purposes of powering textile mills. They remain with us today as shapers of the landscape, for better or for worse, and as powerful forces that impact the health of the River and its ability to recover from two centuries of pollution.
